I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you. Jeremiah 31:3
For my people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water. Jeremiah 2:13
As women, we are often told that our worth is found in being loved, wanted, or chosen. We chase after love in relationships, friendships, careers, and even in how we care for others, always pouring out, always striving, always hoping to be filled in return. But too often, we find ourselves weary, disappointed, and still longing for more.
But no matter how hard we search, the things of this world will always fall short. Our parents, no matter how loving, could never meet our every need. Our friends, no matter how loyal, cannot fill every empty space in our hearts. Even romantic love, designed by God as something beautiful, is carried out by broken humans who, just like us, are incapable of loving perfectly. And so, time and time again, we are left wanting, thirsty for more.
In our desperation, we turn to other wells. Maybe success will quench the ache. Maybe wealth will buy the love we long for. Maybe entertainment can distract us from the emptiness inside. We dig and dig, creating cisterns of our own making, only to find them cracked and dry. We look around, we look down, but we rarely look up.
But Jesus, in His boundless love, came down. He stood among us and declared, "I am the living water" (John 4:10). He knew we were incapable of reaching for Him in our own strength, so He reached for us. He is the sacrificial, unfailing, everlasting love that alone can satisfy the depths of our longing.
Where have you been searching for love in all the wrong places? How much time and energy have you spent trying to draw from empty cisterns, seeking validation from others, measuring your worth by external standards, or believing the lie that God is not good? Today, don’t waste another moment drawing from broken cisterns. They will never quench your thirst. Instead, turn to the One who is the fountain of life.
